Beginner mixed garage shop with a car

A beginner one-car garage workshop that keeps the car is a folding jobsite saw, a 48 in adjustable bench, a mobile base, a shop vacuum with a cyclone separator, a cordless drill kit, a rolling tool chest, wall storage, three LED lights and safety gear: about 30 lines. The Amazon lines total under $3,500. Everything folds, rolls or hangs on the wall, so the car comes home in a 12 x 22 ft bay.

The machines this build is built around

Amazon pick and Grizzly pick for the key machines, before the full list.

Prices change often and Grizzly runs sales, so the buttons show current prices.

This is the answer to "how do I fit a workshop in a one-car garage and still park the car." It is the beginner rung of the mixed shop ladder: a bit of woodworking, a bit of home repair and a bit of car maintenance, built so every tool either rolls, folds or hangs. It is not a woodshop and not an auto shop, which is why it is called mixed. The setups hub lists the intermediate and expert mixed builds, and the single-trade ladders go deeper on woodworking, machining, welding and car work.

The product choices are researched from manufacturer listings, published specifications and owner reviews, not from our own bench time. The beginner rule is the lowest total cost to a working shop that does not take the garage away from the car. The most expensive object in a one-car shop is square footage, so everything here earns its floor space.

The honest numbers for a one-car bay

A 12 x 22 ft bay with a 16 ft sedan leaves about 5 ft in front of the bumper with the door closed and 12 in off the door; a 12 x 20 leaves 3 ft; a 21 ft crew-cab truck does not fit a 20 ft deep bay with the door shut. A sedan is 6.2 ft wide, so a 12 ft wide bay leaves 5.8 ft beside it, and you subtract a 30 in walk-around. That leaves roughly a 3 ft lane on one side, which is where the shop lives. The 12 x 22 mixed layout with a car parked and the 12 x 20 layout draw both, and the park-the-car calculator shows the space left with your vehicle.

Who should not buy this tier

If you never park in the garage, skip the mobile-everything approach and read the beginner woodshop. If you want to mill lumber, weld or run a lathe, none of those fit a bay that holds a car; choose a bigger garage or a different trade. And if the garage is full of stored boxes, clear it first: the cheapest square footage is the stuff you give away.

What you can skip

  • Both options in each pair. The list names alternatives for the saw, the bench and the vises. Buy one of each.
  • A dust collector. A cyclone separator and a vacuum are enough for the tools on this list. See the dust collector roundup when you add a planer.
  • A bandsaw, planer or jointer. They do not fit a bay that holds a car; see the intermediate build.
  • A 240V circuit. Nothing here needs one.
  • A second bench. One good 48 in bench does more than two wobbly ones.
  • A compressor, if you do not need tires or a nailer.

What to upgrade first

  1. Saw blades. A good blade changes a jobsite saw more than any other upgrade.
  2. Clamps. More parallel clamps make glue-ups calm.
  3. A heavier mobile base as the bench gets loaded: the mobile base sizing calculator checks the weight rating.
  4. The saw. When you add a bay, step to the open-stand hybrid in the intermediate mixed build.
  5. A heater. The garage heater BTU calculator sizes one for winter work.

How do you keep the car and the shop in one bay?

The rule is that nothing lives on the floor. Anything on a mobile base lives against the back wall when the car is in, and anything on the wall stays there. The jobsite saw folds against the wall behind the bench. The bench, 48 in wide, sits on its mobile base along the side wall in the lane beside the car. The tool chest rolls out to the car. The shelf and the pegboard take the vertical space. When the car leaves, the lane opens up and the saw comes out of its fold into the middle of the bay. When the car comes home, the saw folds, the bench rolls to the wall, and the bay is a garage again in about five minutes.

A 30 in walk-around beside the car is the working minimum; a 24 in apron at the door is kept clear for the door and for you. The layout calculator packs the exact machine list into your bay, with and without the car. If it says only one machine fits, trust it: two tools you can use beat seven you cannot unpack.

The power plan for a one-car garage shop

Everything here is 120V. A 15 A jobsite saw is the biggest load, so give it a 20 A circuit if you can and do not run the vacuum on the same one: when they start together they trip the breaker. Many one-car garages have one or two outlets on the same circuit as the door opener and the lights. A receptacle tester tells you how each is wired; the workshop amps calculator and the mixed shop subpanel page do the sum. A short, heavy cord beats a long thin one, and the voltage drop calculator shows what a long run costs. Have a licensed electrician confirm any new circuit.

What to buy first, and what to add later

  1. Safety gear and the bench. Respirator, glasses, muffs, extinguishers, the bench and clamps.
  2. The cordless drill kit and the saw.
  3. The vacuum and cyclone separator.
  4. The chest, shelf and pegboard.
  5. Light and the cord reel.
  6. The miter saw, drill press and compressor, as projects ask.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a beginner one-car garage workshop cost?

The Amazon lines on this page total as a budget band rounded up from catalog prices; every button shows the current price. The Grizzly alternatives are priced on grizzly.com and change weekly, so we do not type them.

Can I have a workshop in a one-car garage and still park the car?

Yes, in a 12 x 22 ft bay or larger, if every tool folds, rolls or hangs. A 12 x 20 bay is tighter, and a 21 ft truck does not fit a 20 ft deep bay with the door closed.

What tools do I need for a one-car garage workshop?

A folding jobsite saw, a 48 in bench, a mobile base, a cordless drill kit, a vacuum with a cyclone separator, clamps, a tool chest, wall storage, light and safety gear.

Do I need 240V in a one-car garage shop?

No. Every machine on this list runs on 120V. Plan 240V when you add a cabinet saw, a large collector or a 60 gallon compressor.

What should I buy first?

Safety gear, then the bench and clamps, then the saw. Add the vacuum and separator before you make much dust.
