Expert garage machine shop setup

An expert garage machine shop is a Grizzly G0602 10 x 22 lathe (432 lb), a G0704 7 x 27 mill/drill (372 lb with stand), a T34608 15 in drill press, two vises, measuring tools, a heavy bench and storage: about 35 lines, every machine on 120V. The Amazon lines total under $1,500; the Grizzly machines are priced on grizzly.com. It wants a 22 x 22 ft or larger garage and a 60 A subpanel.

The machines this build is built around

Amazon pick and Grizzly pick for the key machines, before the full list.

Prices change often and Grizzly runs sales, so the buttons show current prices.

This is the build for someone who already knows what a lathe and a mill do, has a two-car garage with one bay to give up, and wants the shop to be accurate. It is the expert rung of the machine shop ladder: the setups hub lists the beginner and intermediate builds. We did not test these machines. Specifications come from the grizzly.com listings and Amazon listings, and the choices follow the expert rule: the performance ceiling that still fits a garage, with an honest note about who should not buy it.

The headline fact about a machine shop is weight, not footprint. The Grizzly G0602 lathe lists a 47-1/2 x 12-1/2 in footprint and 432 lb of shipping weight; the G0704 mill/drill lists 372 lb with its stand. Together that is over 800 lb of machinery that will arrive on a freight truck, will not go up a flight of steps and does not move once it is leveled. The slab, the route from the curb and the help you have on delivery day matter more than the product page does.

It also runs entirely on 120V on the listings: the lathe draws 13.6 A, the mill 12 A and the drill press 5.3 A. That means a machine shop here is an electrical sizing problem more than a 240V problem: several 15 A machines that must not share a circuit. The circuit plan is on this page. The layout assumption is the 22 x 22 two-car machine shop layout, which shows the lathe, mill, bench and storage drawn to scale.

Who should not buy the expert tier

If you have never turned or milled anything, start with the beginner build: a 7 x 14 lathe and a drill press teach the same lessons for a fraction of the money, the floor and the weight. If you rent, or the slab is cracked, do not put 800 lb of machines on it. And if the garage is a one-car bay that still holds a car, this build does not fit: use the 12 x 20 machine shop layout to see what does.

What you can skip

  • A second mill. A bigger or second mill is a project for a bigger garage. The G0704 does most of what a hobbyist needs.
  • CNC conversion. Add it after the manual machines work and you know why you want it.
  • A 240V circuit. Nothing on this list needs one. Spend the money on the 60 A subpanel and good circuits instead.
  • A wide-belt or a planer. They belong in the woodshop ladder, not here.

What to upgrade first

  1. Tooling and measuring. More indexable inserts, boring bars and a micrometer set beat a bigger machine.
  2. The slab. Level shims, a leveled bench and a proper mat. A lathe on a twisted base cuts a taper.
  3. Lighting at the machines. A bright, shadowless light at each station.
  4. Chip control. A tray, a splash guard and a brush are cheaper than a shop vacuum and last longer.

Delivery, slab and leveling

Plan delivery before you order. The lathe arrives at 432 lb shipping weight and the mill at 372 lb with its stand, usually on a pallet by freight with a liftgate truck. The driver will not move it into the garage: you need a pallet jack or a rented machinery dolly, two strong helpers and a clear path from the curb. Measure the garage door opening, the path past the car and any step. A 432 lb machine on a loose hand truck is how backs and toes get broken.

Check the slab. A concrete slab 4 in thick is normal in a garage and carries these machines, but a slab with a crack at the machine position, or a slope to a drain, does not. Level the machine with shims and a precision level, then recheck after a week as the machine settles. Bolt the bench to the wall studs if you plan to use a vise on it.

The circuit plan

Every machine on this list runs on 120V on the listing, so the plan is several dedicated circuits rather than one big one. Give the lathe its own 20 A circuit (13.6 A running, 17 A at 125 percent), the mill its own (12 A, 15 A at 125 percent), the drill press and bench grinder a shared bench circuit, and the compressor its own. A subpanel of 60 A gives you the space. The workshop amps calculator and the machine shop subpanel page do the sum; the numbers are planning sizes and a licensed electrician confirms them.

Voltage drop matters for the lathe: a 13.6 A motor on a 50 ft, 14 gauge cord loses over 3 percent, so run the lathe from a wall receptacle on a 12 AWG circuit rather than a cord. Check the voltage drop calculator for your run.

Where it goes in the garage

In a 22 x 22 two-car garage the lathe goes against a side wall with its long axis along the wall, so its 12-1/2 in depth costs little floor and the bed has room to the right for long stock. The mill sits near the lathe but not facing it, so chips from one do not reach the other, and the bench sits between them. A parked car takes one bay. See the 22 x 22 machine shop layout for the drawing and the G0602 fit sheet for the lathe in all six garage sizes.

Keep oil, solvents and anything flammable away from grinders and any spark. A machine shop and a welding corner should be at opposite ends of the garage, and a fire extinguisher belongs between them.

Frequently asked questions

What does a garage machine shop cost?

The Amazon lines on this page total as a budget band; the Grizzly machines (the lathe, mill, drill press, vises, grinder and bench) are priced on grizzly.com and change weekly, so we do not type them.

Does a machine shop need 240V?

Not the machines on this list: the G0602 lathe is 13.6 A, the G0704 mill is 12 A and the T34608 drill press is 5.3 A, all at 120V on their listings. A larger shop with a big mill or a welder would want 240V.

How much do the machines weigh?

The lathe lists 432 lb shipping weight, the mill 372 lb with its stand and the drill press 127 lb. They arrive by freight and need help to move.

Will a lathe and mill fit in a one-car garage?

Not with a car parked inside. In a 12 x 20 ft one-car garage with no car they fit with a bench; the 12 x 20 machine shop layout shows how.

Should I buy Amazon or Grizzly machines?

The Grizzly lathe and mill are listed direct with owner reviews and a parts line. An Amazon 7 x 14 lathe is the entry alternative and the 7 x 27 class mills on Amazon compete with the G0704; the buy cards on the lathe and mill pages compare them.

This page is researched guidance, not professional electrical, engineering or safety advice. Circuits, loads and clearances depend on your house, your service and your town: have a licensed electrician confirm any wiring, and check local code and each manufacturer's manual before you act.
