Beginner garage machine shop setup

A beginner garage machine shop is a VEVOR 7 x 14 benchtop lathe (550 W), a 12 in benchtop drill press, an 8 in bench grinder, a drill press vise, a 5 in bench vise, a digital caliper and a tooling kit on a sturdy bench: about 30 lines. The Amazon lines total under $2,500. Every machine runs on a 120V outlet, so a 12 x 22 ft one-car garage can hold it, with the car moved out for the machine work.

The machines this build is built around

Amazon pick and Grizzly pick for the key machines, before the full list.

Prices change often and Grizzly runs sales, so the buttons show current prices.

This is the lowest total cost to a working machine shop. A machine shop is different from a woodshop: the machines are small, heavy and bolted to a bench, and what you buy after the lathe (measuring tools, tooling, a vise) costs more than the lathe itself. It is the beginner rung of the machine shop ladder: the setups hub lists the intermediate and expert builds, including the expert machine shop with its 10 x 22 lathe and 7 x 27 mill.

The product choices are researched from manufacturer listings, published specifications and owner reviews, not from our own bench time. The beginner rule is the least spend that cuts real metal: a small lathe, a drill press, a way to grind a tool bit and the instruments to know whether the part is the size you meant. A mill is a second-year purchase, and this list says so plainly.

The layout assumption is a 12 x 22 one-car machine shop layout. The honest fact about a one-car bay is that the car and a lathe do not live together all day: a benchtop lathe on a bench takes about 4 ft of wall, a drill press another 2 ft, and the bench needs a 24 to 36 in operator zone in front of it. Park the car outside on the days you cut metal, or build the bench on the short wall and keep the car in. The park-the-car calculator and the layout calculator show your own numbers.

Who should not buy this tier

If you want to mill, buy a mill or move to the intermediate build. If you already own a lathe, the money here is better spent on tooling. If the garage floor is cracked or you rent and cannot bolt a bench to a wall, hold off. And if you want to turn parts to a thousandth of an inch, a 7 x 14 import lathe is a hobby machine that needs adjustment and patience: it is a very good teacher, and a poor production tool.

What you can skip

  • A mill. A benchtop mill is where a machine shop starts to cost real money and floor. Learn on the lathe and drill press for a year. When you are ready, the intermediate build adds one.
  • CNC. Learn the manual machine first. A CNC conversion adds nothing to a first part.
  • A quick-change tool post and a full set of collets. Buy those after you know what you are making.
  • Both options in each pair. The list names an Amazon and a Grizzly pick for the lathe, drill press, grinder and vise. Buy one of each pair.
  • 240V. Nothing here needs it.
  • A second bench until the first one is full.

What to upgrade first

  1. Tooling and measuring. A micrometer, more inserts, center drills and a drill set make the lathe do more than a bigger lathe would.
  2. The bench. A rigid bench bolted to the wall and leveled with shims improves every cut.
  3. Lighting at the machine. A bright, shadowless light at each station.
  4. Chip control. A tray, a splash guard and a brush are cheaper than a shop vacuum and last longer.
  5. The lathe. When the 7 x 14 limits you on rigidity or length, move to a 9 x 19 or a 10 x 22: the G4000 fit sheet and G0602 fit sheet show them in every garage size.

What fits in a one-car garage with a car?

A 12 x 22 ft one-car garage with a 16 ft sedan leaves about 5 ft behind the front bumper with the door closed and 12 in off the door; a 12 x 20 ft garage leaves 3 ft. A crew-cab truck at 21 ft does not fit a 20 ft bay with the door shut. The machine shop then belongs on the side wall: a bench 24 to 30 in deep, a lathe along it, and the car pulled in beside it. Sedan width is about 6.2 ft, so a 12 ft bay leaves 5.8 ft across, from which you subtract 30 in of walk-around beside the car and your 24 to 36 in operator zone at the bench. It is tight, which is why a beginner machine shop is small on purpose.

If the car stays in all week, the answer is a bench on the short wall at the front and a lathe that comes off it for cleaning. If the car goes outside, a 12 x 22 bay gives a roomy shop. The 12 x 20 machine shop layout and the 12 x 22 layout draw both.

Power for a machine shop on 120V

Every machine here is a plug-in 120V tool. The VEVOR lathe lists 550 W; the 12 in drill press lists a 6.2 A motor; the 8 in grinder is on a standard outlet. A bench with the lathe, grinder, a task lamp and a charger on one 15 A circuit is fine because they rarely all run together, but give the lathe a circuit you do not share with the grinder when you can. Use the receptacle tester on every outlet, and run the lathe from a wall outlet rather than a long cord. For the sum on your own list, the workshop amps calculator and the machine shop subpanel page do the arithmetic. Have a licensed electrician confirm any new circuit.

What to buy first, and what to add later

Buy this list in four steps.

  1. Safety and the bench. Glasses, ear protection, an extinguisher and the bench. Do not put a machine on a wobbly bench; buy the bench first.
  2. The lathe, the caliper and the tooling. The caliper and the tooling are cheap and make the first cut possible. Buy a solid center drill set too.
  3. The drill press, the grinder and the vises. They turn the lathe into a shop: you can drill, hold and sharpen.
  4. Storage and comfort. The chest, the shelf, the mat and the lights. They are what make a shop pleasant to use.

After a year, look at the mill and the bigger lathe, covered in the next rungs. For generic references such as tap drill sizes and speeds and feeds, use WorkshopCalc; this site tells you what fits and what runs in a garage.

Safety in a garage machine shop

A lathe has no guard that replaces common sense. Tie back long hair, roll up sleeves, take off rings and watches, never wear gloves at a spinning chuck and never leave the chuck key in. Put the extinguisher where you can reach it without crossing the machine. Keep oily rags in a metal can with a lid, and keep solvents away from the grinder and any spark. Swarf cuts: sweep it with a brush, not a hand. If the garage is attached to a house, keep the door to the house closed when you grind.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a beginner garage machine shop cost?

The Amazon lines on this page total as a budget band rounded up from catalog prices; every button shows the current price. The Grizzly alternatives are priced on grizzly.com and change weekly, so we do not type them.

What does a beginner machine shop need?

A small lathe, a drill press, a bench grinder, vises, a digital caliper, a tooling kit, a rigid bench, light and safety gear. This page lists every line with links.

Does a machine shop need 240V?

Not at this level. The lathe lists 550 W, the drill press 6.2 A and the grinder runs on a standard outlet. A larger mill or a welder would want 240V.

Can I fit a lathe in a one-car garage?

Yes. A benchtop lathe needs about 4 ft of wall and a rigid bench. With a car parked inside it is tight, so many owners park outside on machining days. The layout calculator shows your numbers.

Should I buy a lathe or a mill first?

Most beginners start with the lathe: it makes round parts, teaches measuring and costs less floor. A mill is the second machine, and the intermediate build adds one.
