Intermediate mixed garage shop with a car

An intermediate single-car garage workshop that keeps the car is a Grizzly G0962 open-stand hybrid saw with a built-in mobile base (297 lb), a 14 in bandsaw, a 6 ft adjustable bench, a heavy-duty mobile base, a G0738 hanging air filter, a drill press and a 20 gallon quiet compressor: about 40 lines. The Amazon lines total under $7,500; Grizzly items are priced on grizzly.com. It fits a 12 x 22 ft bay with the car out of the way while you cut.

The machines this build is built around

Amazon pick and Grizzly pick for the key machines, before the full list.

Prices change often and Grizzly runs sales, so the buttons show current prices.

This is the single-car garage workshop for someone who has outgrown the folding saw but cannot give up the car. It is the middle rung of the mixed shop ladder, after the beginner build; the expert build moves to a two-car garage, and the setups hub compares all three. The product choices are researched from grizzly.com listings, Amazon listings, published specifications and owner reviews, not from our own bench time.

The rule for this tier is that the saw has to be a real saw and the whole shop still has to roll. The Grizzly G0962 is the pivot: a 10 in, 2 HP open-stand hybrid with a cast-iron table (40-1/4 x 27 in), a 21 x 19-1/2 in base footprint, and a built-in mobile base, at 297 lb shipping weight and 15 A at 120V (or 7.5 A at 240V) on the listing. It rolls out into the stock lane when you cut and rolls back to the wall when the car comes home. That is the idea of the whole build: heavy tools that move.

The honest numbers for a one-car bay

A 12 x 22 ft bay with a 16 ft sedan leaves 5 ft in front of the bumper with the door closed; a 12 x 20 leaves 3 ft; a 21 ft truck does not fit a 20 ft deep bay with the door shut. A sedan is 6.2 ft wide, which leaves 5.8 ft in a 12 ft bay, minus a 30 in walk-around. The stock lane for an 8 ft board past a table saw is machine depth plus 1.5 times the stock, about 14 to 16 ft. A one-car bay cannot hold that with the car in it: you cut long boards with the car out, or with the door open and the lane running into the driveway. The 12 x 22 mixed layout and the 20 x 20 mixed layout draw the cases, and the G0962 fit sheet shows the saw in every garage size.

Who should not buy this tier

If you have not run a jobsite saw, start with the beginner build. If the car must stay in all week and you cut every evening, a one-car bay is the wrong room; read the guides for ideas. If you need a planer or a jointer, none fits a bay that holds a car; step to the intermediate woodshop in a two-car garage. And if the panel has one shared circuit, fix that first.

What you can skip

  • Both options in each pair. The list names alternatives for the saw, bandsaw, bench, vise, filter and dust collector. Buy one of each.
  • A planer or a jointer. They do not fit a bay that holds a car, and a benchtop planer needs the collector. Mill lumber elsewhere or buy it surfaced.
  • A cabinet saw. A 508 lb, 240V machine belongs in a larger garage; see the expert woodshop.
  • A 240V circuit. The G0962 and the bandsaw both run on 120V.
  • A lathe, mill or welder. Different trades with their own builds.
  • A fixed, wall-mount collector. A portable unit rolls away; a wall-mount takes wall you need.

What to upgrade first

  1. Saw blade and fence setup. A premium blade and a tuned fence return more than any new machine.
  2. Outfeed support. A rolling support behind the saw keeps boards from tipping.
  3. Dust capture at the saw. Connect the collector to the saw and the bandsaw; the air filter handles the rest.
  4. A heater and door insulation. The garage heater BTU calculator sizes one; cold garages get less work done.
  5. The garage. When you add a bay, the expert mixed build adds the 240V tools.

Can a hybrid saw live in a single-car garage with a car?

Yes, if it rolls. The G0962 has a built-in mobile base, so the whole saw moves as one unit. Park the car, roll the saw to the back wall, and the bay is a garage. When the car leaves, roll the saw into the middle with its fence along the length of the bay, and you have a stock lane. The trouble is the lane: an 8 ft board needs about 14 to 16 ft of length around a table saw, and a 22 ft bay with no car has 22 ft, while a 12 x 20 has 20. With the car in, nothing here is workable. So the working pattern is the car out for cutting days, in for the rest.

The bandsaw, the bench, the drill press and the router table live along the side walls, on mobile bases where the footprint allows. Walk-around beside a parked sedan is 30 in at least, and a 24 in apron at the door stays clear. The layout calculator packs your list into your bay with and without a car, and the mobile base sizing calculator checks the weight rating of each base. Aim for a base rated at least 1.3 times the machine.

The circuit plan for a 120V single-car shop

The G0962 lists 15 A at 120V, and 7.5 A at 240V; the bandsaw lists 11 A (Grizzly) and the WEN is dual-voltage; the collector lists 12 A (Grizzly) or is a 1 HP class machine. Add the compressor and the vacuum and a one-car garage with one shared circuit trips a breaker on every cut. The rule is one machine per circuit, and a collector that runs while the saw cuts needs its own. Under NEC Table 430.248 a 2 HP single-phase motor draws 24 A at 115V; at 125 percent that is 30 A, which is why a 2 HP saw on a 15 A or 20 A circuit relies on the nameplate and why 240V is attractive. Wiring the saw for 240V halves the current; see the 240V circuit calculator and the guides. The workshop amps calculator and the mixed shop subpanel page do the sum. Have a licensed electrician confirm all of it.

What to buy first, and what to add later

  1. Safety, the bench and the clamps.
  2. The saw on its base. Then the miter saw.
  3. The collector and air filter, before you add much dust.
  4. The bandsaw and the drill press.
  5. The chest, shelf and pegboard.
  6. The compressor, floor tiles and the cord reel.

The matching roundups are the table saw roundup and the dust collector roundup. For generic references see WorkshopCalc.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an intermediate single-car garage workshop cost?

The Amazon lines on this page total as a budget band rounded up from catalog prices; every button shows the current price. The Grizzly saw, bandsaw, bench, vise, filter and dust collector are priced on grizzly.com and change weekly, so we do not type them.

Can I keep a table saw in a single-car garage?

Yes, on a mobile base. The G0962 has one built in and weighs 297 lb on its listing. Roll it out to cut and back to the wall when the car comes home.

Do I need 240V?

No. The G0962 runs at 15 A on 120V (7.5 A on 240V on the listing) and the other machines are 120V. Give the saw and collector circuits of their own.

Will a bandsaw and a table saw fit with a car parked?

In a 12 x 22 ft bay, with the saw on its base against the wall and the bandsaw on a mobile base, yes. You cut long boards with the car out. The layout calculator shows your numbers.

Should I buy a Grizzly or an Amazon saw?

The Grizzly G0962 has a cast-iron table and a built-in base; the SawStop jobsite saw has a flesh-sensing brake and a mobile cart. Both roll. Pick on the feature you value.
