Intermediate garage auto shop setup

An intermediate garage auto shop is a Grizzly 42 in top chest and 5-drawer roller cabinet, a 20 gallon quiet compressor with a 50 ft retractable hose reel and a 71-piece air tool kit, a 4 ft workbench with outlets, a vise, floor tiles, 6-pack lighting and fire and eye gear: about 40 lines. The Amazon lines total under $3,000; Grizzly items are priced on grizzly.com.

It runs on 120V and works in a 20 x 20 ft two-car garage with the car in one bay.

The machines this build is built around

Amazon pick and Grizzly pick for the key machines, before the full list.

Prices change often and Grizzly runs sales, so the buttons show current prices.

This is the garage for someone who does brakes, suspension, tires and the occasional engine job on a regular basis, and who is tired of working around a pile of tools. It is the middle rung of the auto shop ladder: the beginner build starts with a cordless impact and a pancake compressor, the expert build adds a 60 gallon 230V compressor, and the setups hub lists all three.

The product choices are researched from grizzly.com listings, Amazon listings and owner reviews, not from our own bench time. The rule for this tier is to add the two things that make a job go faster: air, and a place for every tool. A 20 gallon compressor runs a ratchet, a blow gun and short bursts of an impact; a roller cabinet and top chest mean the right socket is two feet away, not in a bucket.

The layout assumption is the 20 x 20 two-car auto layout: one bay is the car, which is also the workpiece, and the other holds the storage wall, the bench and the compressor. A sedan is 16 ft by 6.2 ft, parked 12 in from the door, with a 30 in walk-around beside it and 18 in at the ends. That leaves a lane of about 10 ft in the other bay. You can open the car doors, roll the cabinet to the fender and still reach the bench, which a one-car garage cannot do. The park-the-car calculator shows your own numbers.

Safety that the list does not sell

Rated jack stands, wheel chocks, a floor jack and a torque wrench are the safest items in an auto shop, and they are not in our catalog. Buy stands rated above your vehicle weight, read the vehicle manual for lift points and never rely on a jack alone. This page is planning information, not safety instruction.

Who should not buy this tier

If you change oil and brake pads twice a year, the beginner build covers it. If you have an attached one-car garage and a daily-driver that must be in by evening, the cabinet and bench footprint may be too much. And if you plan an engine rebuild every winter, the expert build with its bigger compressor and engine stand is closer.

What you can skip

  • A 60 gallon compressor. That is the expert build. A 20 gallon unit is right for brake, suspension and tire work.
  • Both options in each pair. The list names alternatives for the chest, cabinet, compressor, bench, vise and grinder. Buy one of each.
  • A car lift. It needs ceiling height, a slab spec and a lot of money. Rated jack stands cover most garage work.
  • A tire changer and balancer. Take wheels to a tire shop until you change them weekly.
  • An engine hoist and stand until you plan an engine job; the expert build covers it.
  • 240V. Nothing here needs it, though an EV charger might.

What to upgrade first

  1. Rated jack stands, chocks and a torque wrench. Not in our catalog; buy them before anything else.
  2. Air hose quality and fittings. Quick couplers that match; a leak at a cheap fitting wastes the compressor.
  3. Light under the car. A magnetic work light.
  4. A heater. The garage heater BTU calculator sizes one; work gets done when the shop is warm.
  5. The compressor. When air tools stall, step up to the 60 gallon unit; the 60 gallon fit sheet shows what it needs.

What fits in a 20 x 20 garage with a car?

A 20 x 20 two-car garage has a 16 ft door and 400 sq ft. A sedan parks about 16 ft deep, 12 in off the door, and 6.2 ft wide, leaving 3 to 4 ft behind the bumper at the back wall. The storage wall runs along the side of the second bay. A 42 in roller cabinet and a 4 ft bench fit the back wall with the compressor beside them, and the car sits in the other bay with room to open its doors. A crew-cab truck is 21 ft and does not fit a 20 ft deep bay with the door closed; it stays in the driveway when you work. The 20 x 20 auto layout draws it and the layout calculator accepts your own bay and vehicle.

The compressor and the circuit

The 20 gallon, 2 HP compressors on this list run on 120V. Under NEC Table 430.248 a 2 HP single-phase motor draws 24 A at 115V; at 125 percent that is 30 A, which a 120V garage circuit will not supply, so the compressor listing and its nameplate decide what it really pulls. In practice many 2 HP "peak" ratings run on a 15 or 20 A circuit. Read the listing, put the compressor on a circuit of its own, and have a licensed electrician confirm it. The workshop amps calculator and the auto shop subpanel page do the sum. Noise matters in an attached garage: the quiet-series units on this list are rated lower than a standard oil-lubricated pump, and a rubber pad under the tank helps.

Compressor sizing by kind of work: the auto wrench work page and full auto shop page compare tools together. A 20 gallon unit runs a ratchet and bursts of an impact; running several tools together or a die grinder continuously needs the expert build.

What to buy first, and what to add later

  1. Safety. Stands, chocks, glasses, ear protection, extinguishers.
  2. Storage. The roller cabinet and top chest, because they set the shape of the shop.
  3. The bench and the vise.
  4. The compressor, hose reel and air tool kit, in that order.
  5. Floor tiles, mat and light.
  6. Insulation and a heater, when you notice the cold.

For torque specs, socket sizes and other generic references, see WorkshopCalc; this site covers what fits and what runs in a garage. The setups hub compares all the builds.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an intermediate garage auto shop cost?

The Amazon lines on this page total as a budget band rounded up from catalog prices; every button shows the current price. The Grizzly chest, cabinet, bench, vise, grinder and compressor alternatives are priced on grizzly.com and change weekly.

What size air compressor for an auto shop?

A 20 gallon, 2 HP compressor runs a ratchet, a blow gun and short bursts of an impact. Continuous air tools and sanding want a 60 gallon, 230V unit. The compressor sizing pages compare the work.

Will it fit in a two-car garage with a car?

Yes. A 20 x 20 bay holds the car in one side and the cabinet, bench and compressor in the other, with a 30 in walk-around beside the car. A crew-cab truck does not fit a 20 ft deep bay with the door shut.

Do I need 240V?

Not for this build. The 20 gallon compressors run on 120V. The expert build adds a 230V compressor and a subpanel.

Should I buy a Grizzly or an Amazon chest?

The Grizzly 42 in chest and roller cabinet are a matching, expandable pair; the Amazon chests are one-box purchases at a lower entry cost. Choose on how much you plan to add.
