Intermediate garage woodshop setup

An intermediate garage woodshop is a Grizzly G0869 variable-speed benchtop saw, a 14 in bandsaw, a 13 in benchtop planer, a G0945 6 in benchtop jointer, a wall-mount dust collector and a hanging air filter, with a bench, clamps and safety gear: about 40 lines. The Amazon lines total under $6,000; Grizzly machines are priced on grizzly.com. Everything runs on 120V, so a 20 x 20 ft two-car garage can keep a car in one bay.

The machines this build is built around

Amazon pick and Grizzly pick for the key machines, before the full list.

Prices change often and Grizzly runs sales, so the buttons show current prices.

This is the buy-once woodshop for someone who has outgrown a folding jobsite saw. You have built a few projects, you are tired of buying dimensioned lumber at a premium, and you want to mill your own boards without giving up the car. It is the middle rung of the woodshop ladder: the setups hub lists the beginner and expert builds, and the beginner woodshop is the right start if you have never owned a table saw.

The product choices are researched from manufacturer listings, published specifications and owner reviews, not from our own bench time. The rule for this tier is simple: spend on the machines that remove your biggest daily frustration, keep everything on ordinary 120V circuits, and keep every machine either on wheels or against a wall. Intermediate means the first dust collector, the first planer and the first jointer, and a cut quality you will not outgrow for years.

The layout assumption is a 20 x 20 ft two-car garage with one bay holding a car, as drawn on the 20 x 20 woodshop layout and the 20 x 20 mixed layout with a car parked. A sedan is about 16 ft long and 6.2 ft wide, so one bay is gone, and the other bay is your shop. In a 12 x 22 ft one-car bay this build does not all fit with the car in: you roll machines out after the car leaves, and the park-the-car calculator shows your own numbers.

Who this tier is for, and who it is not for

Buy this build if you work wood most weekends, you have a garage that is at least 20 ft deep and wide, and you do not want to rebuy a saw in two years. Do not buy it if you have never made a cut: the beginner build teaches the same lessons for much less. Do not buy it if your panel has no spare capacity, because the sum of the machines running together needs planning, covered below. And skip it if you want a 3 HP cabinet saw: that is the expert woodshop, with its 240V circuit.

What you can skip

  • A 240V circuit. Nothing here needs one. The bandsaw is dual-voltage and the rest are 120V. Save the electrician for the expert build.
  • A cabinet saw. A 3 HP cabinet saw is a floor-eating, 240V machine; the intermediate saw is the benchtop. If you want one, read the table saw roundup and the expert build.
  • Both options in each pair. The list names an Amazon and a Grizzly pick for the bandsaw, jointer, dust collector and vise. Buy one of each pair, not both.
  • A drum sander. Interesting, large and not needed when a planer and a random orbit sander cover the work.
  • A lathe. Turning is a second hobby with its own tools. Add it only when you want it.
  • A ducted dust system. A wall-mount collector and short hose runs do the job in a garage this size. Rigid ducting is for the expert shop.

What to upgrade first

  1. The planer blades or cutterhead. Sharp knives make a planer a different machine. Check the listing for replacement knives or a spiral head.
  2. Saw blades. A good 10 in blade changes a benchtop saw more than a new fence.
  3. Air filtration to match the collector. If you smell dust the morning after, the filter needs another speed or another unit.
  4. A second bench or an outfeed table. Boards need support after the planer and the saw; see the workbench pages.
  5. The saw. The expert path is a hybrid or cabinet saw: the G0771Z fit sheet shows it in every garage size.

Does an intermediate woodshop fit in a two-car garage with a car?

Yes, in a 20 x 20 ft bay with one car, if the machines are on wheels and the floor stays clear in the car's bay. A 20 x 20 two-car garage has a 16 ft door, so a sedan takes about 16 ft of length and 6.2 ft of width, with a 30 in walk-around beside and 18 in at the ends. That leaves roughly 10 ft of width for the shop. The benchtop saw, the bandsaw and the planer all live along the wall facing the car, with the jointer and planer on mobile bases; the bench goes at the back.

The stock lane is the hard part. Handling an 8 ft board past a table saw wants about 14 to 16 ft of lane, which means in a 20 ft deep bay you cut long boards with the car out or with the door open and the lane running into the driveway. A shop in a 12 x 22 ft one-car garage has the same problem with less room. The garage shop layout calculator packs the exact machine list into your bay, with and without the car, and the G0555 fit sheet and G0945 fit sheet show those two machines in each garage size.

The electrical plan for this shop

Everything on this list runs on 120V, but that does not make it small. The G0869 saw, the planer, the jointer, the collector and the bandsaw are all 10 to 15 A loads, and a shop that runs two at once on one 20 A circuit trips breakers. The usual working rule is one machine per circuit, and a collector that runs while the machine cuts needs its own circuit too. That means the saw, the planer, the collector and the bench each get a 20 A circuit: four circuits in the shop bay, plus lighting.

Use the workshop amps calculator to total your own list. The woodshop subpanel page works the general case. For motor loads the sizing sources are NEC Table 430.248 for full-load amps and Table 310.16 for conductors: for example a 1 HP single-phase motor lists 16 A at 115V and 8 A at 230V. Motor circuits are sized at 125 percent of full-load current, so a 16 A motor needs a 20 A breaker and 12 AWG copper. Have a licensed electrician confirm any new circuit; this page gives planning numbers, not a permit.

The bandsaw is the one dual-voltage machine on the list. Wiring it for 240V halves the current, so it can share the 240V circuit you add when you upgrade to the expert shop. For the 240V steps, see the 240V circuit calculator.

What to buy first, and what to add later

Do not buy this whole list in a week. Buy in the order that each purchase makes the next one useful.

  1. Safety gear and the bench. Respirator, glasses, muffs, extinguishers, the bench and clamps. They cost the least and prevent the most harm.
  2. The saw and the miter saw. The cutting core. Build a few projects before adding more.
  3. Dust collection. Buy the wall-mount collector before the planer, not after: planers throw more chips than any other garage machine, and a planer with no collector fills a garage in an afternoon.
  4. The planer, then the jointer. The planer alone lets you take rough lumber to thickness, but a board must be flat on one face first, so the jointer follows. Buy both together if the budget allows.
  5. The bandsaw, the sanders, the router table. Add as projects demand.
  6. The hanging air filter. Last, and then only if the shop smells of dust after you finish for the day.

The matching roundups are the dust collector roundup and the table saw roundup.

Dust control with a parked car

Fine dust settles on a car, and a 560 CFM class collector at one end of a 20 ft bay will not capture everything the planer throws. The working answer is three layers: capture at the machine with the collector or the cyclone separator, filter the room air with the hanging filter, and keep a cover over the car. A hanging air filter with a timer clears the air after you stop cutting. The dust collector sizing for a 20 x 20 and air filtration for a 20 x 20 pages give the computed numbers. Dust is also a combustion hazard and a health hazard: wear the respirator, empty the bag outside, and never leave the collector running unattended.

Where this build stops

This is the buy-once shop. The next steps are a 240V cabinet saw and a cyclone, which is the expert build. Before you go there, confirm the panel has room, the slab is level, and you actually need the capacity. For generic machine reference such as blade types, feed speeds and lumber sizes, see WorkshopCalc; this site covers what fits and what runs in a garage. The setups hub compares all the builds.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an intermediate garage woodshop cost?

The Amazon lines on this page total as a budget band rounded up from catalog prices; every button shows the current price. The Grizzly machines, the G0869 saw, the G0945 jointer, the G0785 collector and the G0738 filter, are priced on grizzly.com and change weekly, so we do not type them.

What machines does an intermediate woodshop need?

A benchtop or hybrid table saw, a miter saw, a bandsaw, a planer, a jointer, a drill press, a router table, a dust collector and an air filter, plus a bench and clamps. Every line on this page is linked.

Can this woodshop run on 120V?

Yes. Every machine on this list is a 120V machine on its listing, and the bandsaw can also run on 240V. Give the saw, the planer and the collector circuits of their own, and have a licensed electrician confirm any new circuit.

Will it fit in a two-car garage with a car?

In a 20 x 20 ft two-car garage with one car, yes, if the planer, jointer and bench are on mobile bases. In a 12 x 22 ft one-car garage you roll machines out after the car leaves. The layout calculator shows your numbers.

Should I buy the Amazon or the Grizzly version?

Where the list names both, they are alternatives. The Grizzly machines are cast-iron and ship direct with a parts line; the Amazon picks lower the entry cost. Buy one from each pair, not both.

This page is researched guidance, not professional electrical, engineering or safety advice. Circuits, loads and clearances depend on your house, your service and your town: have a licensed electrician confirm any wiring, and check local code and each manufacturer's manual before you act.
