5 in swivel bench vise
Both are 5 in vises with a 360 degree swivel base. The Grizzly one is a drop-forged industrial unit; the Amazon one is a lower-priced 5 in cast-iron vise.
Complete setup · Beginner welding and fab
A beginner garage welding and fab setup is a YESWELDER 140A dual-voltage MIG/flux core welder, a 2-tier welding cart with cylinder slots, a 4-1/2 in angle grinder, a 5 in bench vise, clamps, a P100 respirator and fire extinguishers: about 25 lines. The Amazon lines total under $2,500. It plugs into 120V to start and can run on 240V later, so a 12 x 22 ft one-car garage can hold it with the car moved out while you weld.
Amazon pick and Grizzly pick for the key machines, before the full list.
Both are 5 in vises with a 360 degree swivel base. The Grizzly one is a drop-forged industrial unit; the Amazon one is a lower-priced 5 in cast-iron vise.
Both are 8 in bench grinders with work lights. Neither needs more than a 120V outlet; pick on price and the wheel guards you like.
Prices change often and Grizzly runs sales, so the buttons show current prices.
This is the lowest total cost to a safe, working weld table. Welding in a garage is mostly about what is around the arc: fire, fumes, floor and the car. The welder itself is the smallest part of the list. It is the beginner rung of the welding and fab ladder: the setups hub lists the intermediate and expert builds, and the intermediate welding build adds a 205A welder, a plasma cutter and a compressor.
The product choices are researched from manufacturer listings, published specifications and owner reviews, not from our own bench time. The beginner rule is to buy a machine that runs on the circuit you have, learn on it, and spend the rest on safety and clamping. The YESWELDER 140A on this list is dual-voltage, 110V/220V, with MIG, flux core, lift TIG and stick on its title, so it grows with the garage. Read the listing for duty cycle and the extension-cord and breaker guidance before you plug it in.
The layout assumption is the 12 x 22 one-car welding and fab layout. Welding and a parked car do not mix: sparks, spatter and grinding dust land on paint, fuel is in the tank and the battery is a hazard. Park the car outside, or at least 10 ft from the table, when you work. The park-the-car calculator and the layout calculator show your own numbers.
If you want to weld thick plate for a living or build a trailer, the 140A class is too small, and the intermediate or expert builds fit better. If your garage is attached and full of stored paint, gasoline or cardboard, clear it before any arc is struck. If you rent, check the lease and the insurance: a garage fire is an uninsured loss in some policies. And if you have never welded, take a class; no list replaces an hour with someone who can watch your puddle.

Every row of this build as one list you can keep and price, plus the planning checklist. A few short emails follow, then a couple a month at most.
Unsubscribe anytime. You can also just read the checklist on this site. Not safely at the same time. A car has fuel in the tank, a battery, plastic and paint, and spatter and grinding sparks fly several feet. Park the car outside, or at the far end of a two-car garage at least 10 ft from the table, with a welding blanket or nothing at all between. Clear paint, fuel cans, cardboard, rags and solvents from the area before you start, and keep a bucket of sand or a second extinguisher beside the table. Sparks smolder: check the shop an hour after you finish.
In a 12 x 22 ft one-car garage a sedan leaves about 5 ft in front of the bumper with the door closed, and a 12 x 20 leaves 3 ft. That is not enough room to weld beside a parked car. The honest plan for a one-car bay is to weld with the door open and the car outside, then close up. The 12 x 20 welding and fab layout and the 12 x 22 layout draw it.
The 140A welder on this list is dual-voltage: it plugs into 110V (120V) outlets or a 220V (240V) receptacle. On 120V, a welder draws a lot of current in short bursts, so put it on a 20 A circuit of its own and do not run the grinder on the same circuit. Under NEC Table 310.16 at 60 C, 12 AWG copper carries 20 A and 10 AWG carries 30 A. The welder listing gives the input current and the extension-cord guidance, so read it before you buy a cord or a receptacle.
On 240V a 6-50 receptacle on a 50 A breaker with 6 AWG copper (55 A in the table) is the common welder circuit; the 6-3 NM-B cable in the expert build is a typical feeder. The 240V circuit calculator and the voltage drop calculator do the arithmetic, and the welding and fab subpanel page sizes a subpanel. Have a licensed electrician confirm any new circuit.
The earlier you add fume control, the longer you can work. For generic references such as wire speeds and steel gauges see WorkshopCalc; this site covers what fits and what runs in a garage. This page is planning information, not safety instruction: read the welder manual, take a class and follow your local fire code.
The Amazon lines on this page total as a budget band rounded up from catalog prices; every button shows the current price. The Grizzly vise and grinder alternatives are priced on grizzly.com and change weekly, so we do not type them.
Yes, with a clear area, extinguishers, ventilation and no car or fuel nearby. Check your insurance and local fire rules. Fume and fire are the main hazards, and a respirator does not replace ventilation.
Not to start. The 140A welder on this list runs on 120V and 240V. A 240V 50 A circuit lets it work harder, and a licensed electrician should install it.
Flux core needs no bottle and is the simplest way to start; gas MIG makes cleaner welds on thin steel. The welder on this list does both, and the cart has the cylinder slots.
Yes, if the car is outside while you weld. A welder, cart, grinder, vise and bench fit a 12 x 22 ft bay. The layout calculator shows your own numbers.
This page is researched guidance, not professional electrical, engineering or safety advice. Circuits, loads and clearances depend on your house, your service and your town: have a licensed electrician confirm any wiring, and check local code and each manufacturer's manual before you act.
