Workbench

Workbench size for a one-car garage

In a 12 x 20 ft one-car garage with a sedan parked, no bench fits with a 30 in aisle: only 3 ft is left behind the front bumper. With the car outside, a bench the full 12 ft width fits along the back wall. In a 12 x 22 ft bay with a sedan, a bench up to 12 ft long and 30 in deep fits. Two extra feet of depth is the whole difference.

What the layout engine says

We ran a bench of every length from 2 ft to 16 ft and three depths through our layout engine for each garage size, with a mid-size sedan parked (16 ft long, 6.2 ft wide, parked 12 in from the door) and with no vehicle. A bench counts as fitting only if it clears the car's 30 in walk-around and keeps a 30 in aisle in front of it. The longest that fits:

GarageNo carSedan parked
12 x 20 one-car12 ft, any depth to 36 innone fits
12 x 22 one-car12 ft, any depth to 36 in12 ft at 24 and 30 in deep; 2.5 ft at 36 in
20 x 20 two-car16 ft (the search limit)16 ft, any depth to 36 in
22 x 22 and larger16 ft16 ft, any depth to 36 in

The search stops at 16 ft, so "16 ft" means "at least 16 ft." Truck owners should read the next sentence: a crew-cab truck is about 21 ft long, which does not fit a 20 ft deep garage with the door closed, and in a 22 ft deep one it leaves nothing behind the nose. Run your own vehicle through the workbench size calculator.

The lesson is that a one-car garage that is 20 ft deep is a parking space with a shelf, and a 22 ft deep one is a parking space with a bench. If you are building or buying, depth is worth more than width.

When the answer is none: three ways out

  1. A fold-down bench. A wall-mounted bench that folds against the studs is 4 to 6 in deep when closed. It needs a strong wall and a load rating checked against what you will put on it. In a 12 x 20 garage it is the only bench that coexists with a parked car.
  2. A bench on locking casters. A 48 in bench on wheels rolls out from the wall when the car is gone and sits against it when the car is back. The 500 lb WEN universal mobile base or a bench with casters on the listing does it. Lock every caster before you use it.
  3. A narrow wall shelf. Behind the front bumper there is 3 ft of floor and 18 in of walking gap beyond a 12 in deep shelf. A shelf and pegboard hold the hand tools, and the bench is the garage floor in front of the car's nose when the car is out.

Length: how much bench is enough

Five to six feet is comfortable for one person; eight feet suits two. A bench longer than the project needs becomes a place where things pile up. In a small bay, a 48 in bench on wheels beats a 72 in bench you cannot fit. The two sizes in our catalog sit at the ends of that range: a 48 in adjustable bench with a pegboard and power strip, and a 70 in adjustable-height bench with power outlets. For the Grizzly route, the T34010 is a 4 ft adjustable heavy-duty bench with outlets and the T34011 is the 6 ft version; the T10157 is a fixed oak top on steel legs.

Depth: 24 inches is usually the answer

24 in fits a car's end, holds a vise, and lets you reach the wall. 30 in is the comfortable maximum for a standing reach (40 percent of your height; 28 in at 5 ft 10 in). Anything deeper needs a bigger aisle. The aisle in front of the bench is the real constraint: 30 in lets you stand and work, 36 in lets you pass behind someone else. The height calculator gives depth and height together.

Power and light at the bench

A bench is where the outlets matter. A bench with built-in outlets (the WEN, Cammoo and Betterhood listings in our catalog all mention power strips or outlets, and so do the Grizzly T34010 and T34011) keeps cords off the floor, but a built-in power strip is still one 15 A circuit: do not plug a table saw, a vacuum and a sander into it at once. Run a dedicated 20 A circuit to the bench if you can, and put a 4 ft LED fixture directly over it. The lighting calculator sizes it.

What to buy for a one-car garage

  • 12 x 20 with a car that stays in: a fold-down bench or a 48 in bench on casters, plus wall shelves.
  • 12 x 22 with a car: a 4 or 6 ft adjustable bench along the back wall, 24 to 30 in deep.
  • 12 x 20 with no car: a full-width bench along the back wall and a second 4 ft bench on a side wall, leaving a 30 in aisle.

Before you buy, tape the bench outline on the slab and park the car. It takes ten minutes and saves a return. The 12 x 22 mixed layout shows a bench in context.

What it takes to test your own garage in ten minutes

The table above is for the standard bays. Your garage will differ by a few inches and a column or a water heater, so confirm it with tape.

  1. Measure the clear interior of the bay and the car's length and width. A mid-size sedan is 16 ft by 6.2 ft, an SUV 16.5 by 6.5 ft and a crew-cab truck 21 by 6.7 ft.
  2. Park the car where you actually park it, about 12 in from the door end.
  3. Measure the floor behind the front bumper to the back wall. That is your strip: 3 ft in a 12 x 20 ft bay, 5 ft in a 12 x 22 ft bay with a sedan.
  4. Add the bench depth to the aisle you want in front of it (30 to 36 in). That sum has to be no more than the strip. In a 5 ft (60 in) strip, a 24 in bench with a 30 in aisle is 54 in and fits, and a 30 in bench with a 30 in aisle is exactly 60 in. In a 3 ft (36 in) strip, even a 12 in shelf with a 24 in aisle is the limit, which is why the layout engine finds no full bench in the 20 ft bay and a fold-down is the answer there.
  5. Tape the outline of the bench on the slab and stand in front of it with the car parked. Open the driver door. Walk past it.

The workbench size calculator runs this for any bay and vehicle, and the park-the-car calculator gives the strip.

Benches for the other bays

If your garage is not a one-car, the answer is simpler. In a 20 x 20 ft two-car bay with one sedan, the shop side is about 9 to 11 ft wide and 20 ft deep, so a 6 ft bench along the back wall and a rolling table fit with 36 in aisles. In a 22 x 22 ft bay, an 8 ft bench plus an assembly table fits, and in a 24 x 24 ft or 32 x 24 ft bay you can add an island or a machine bench. See garage workbench ideas for the ten designs, assembly table versus workbench for the big surface and two car garage workshop ideas and layout for the whole bay.

When you pick the bench, check the listing for the three numbers that matter: depth, height range and load rating. The CAMMOO 48 x 24 in bench with pegboard gives its depth in the title. For the others the depth is on the listing page: the WEN 48 in bench, the Betterhood 70 in and the VEVOR 72 in. And on the Grizzly side, the T34010 (4 ft), T34011 (6 ft) and T10157 (oak, fixed) each have a listing with dimensions. We do not quote numbers we do not have.

Storage that does not eat the strip

In a bay where the strip is the constraint, storage goes up, not out. A bench that is 24 in deep with a 12 in deep shelf above it at 60 in is the same floor as a bench alone. A pegboard on the wall behind the bench uses no floor. A shelf unit such as the VEVOR 60 x 24 x 78 in takes 24 in of depth, so it goes on a side wall, outside the car's walk-around. A locking cabinet like the GREATMEET wall cabinet hangs on the wall above the bench.

Keep the car's walk-around clear: 30 in beside the car so the doors open, 18 in at the ends. Anything that intrudes there is a dent waiting to happen. For storage ideas and heights, see garage workbench and storage and how to organize a garage workshop. Power for the bench is in workbench with power outlets, and the depth rules are in how deep should a garage workbench be.

Mistakes that make a bench not fit

A bench that does not fit usually fails for a reason you could have found with tape. The common ones:

  • Measuring the slab, not the clear interior. Builders quote slab sizes a few inches larger than the clear space. Measure wall to wall.
  • Forgetting the garage door. The overhead door, its tracks and the opener take the ceiling and the front few feet. A tall pegboard or shelf can hit a door that rolls up and back.
  • Ignoring the car's door swing. A driver's door opens 3 ft or more. A bench or a shelf on the wall in that arc gets dented, and so does the door.
  • Counting the aisle after the fact. A bench is not its footprint. Add the 30 to 36 in you need to stand in front of it.
  • Forgetting the second vehicle. A bike, a mower and a cabinet of paint cans also live in the garage. List them before you fill the free strip.
  • Buying for the best case. Plan for the largest vehicle you might own. A crew-cab truck at 21 ft does not fit a 20 ft deep bay with the door closed, so if the truck is in your future, the bench plan changes.

Fix them with tape and a tape measure and the workbench size calculator, and plan the shop around the strip with how to lay out a garage shop. If the bench is only a place for hand tools and projects, a fold-down or a rolling bench from this page and that page will fit where a fixed bench will not.

Frequently asked questions

What size workbench fits a one-car garage?

With no car, up to 12 ft along the back wall of a 12 ft wide bay. With a sedan parked, none fits in a 12 x 20 ft bay with a 30 in aisle; in a 12 x 22 ft bay a bench up to 12 ft long and 30 in deep fits.

Can I have a workbench and park a car in a one-car garage?

Only if the garage is deep enough: a sedan leaves 3 ft behind its nose in a 20 ft bay and 5 ft in a 22 ft bay. A fold-down or wheeled bench works in the shallower bay.

How long should a garage workbench be?

Five to six feet for one person, eight for two. In a small bay a 48 in bench is a better trade than a 72 in bench that does not fit.

What is a good depth for a workbench with a car?

24 in leaves the most aisle. Add 30 in of aisle in front and the bench needs 54 in of floor behind the car's nose.

Are rolling workbenches stable?

A bench with locking casters is stable for most work when all the casters are locked. Check the weight rating and avoid planing or chopping on one that is not anchored.
