Benchtop table saw
The Amazon pick is a jobsite saw with a folding rolling stand you can stow against a wall; the Grizzly saw is a heavier variable-speed benchtop that stays on its bench.
Complete setup · Beginner woodshop
A beginner garage woodshop is a folding jobsite saw, a sliding miter saw, a benchtop drill press, a router table, a shop vacuum with a cyclone separator, clamps, an adjustable bench, a mobile base and the safety gear: about 25 lines, with the Amazon items totalling under $2,500. Every machine stores against a wall or rolls, so a 12 x 22 ft one-car garage keeps its car.
Amazon pick and Grizzly pick for the key machines, before the full list.
The Amazon pick is a jobsite saw with a folding rolling stand you can stow against a wall; the Grizzly saw is a heavier variable-speed benchtop that stays on its bench.
Both are benchtop drill presses on a 120V cord. The Grizzly lists a 15 in swing with an LED light and laser guide; the Amazon pick is a 12 in size at a lower entry cost.
Prices change often and Grizzly runs sales, so the buttons show current prices.
This is the lowest total cost to a working woodshop, designed around one constraint: the garage still has to park a car. Every machine here either folds, rolls on a mobile base or sits on a bench that rolls, and all of them run on ordinary 120V circuits, so there is no electrician on the critical path. It is the beginner rung of a ladder: the setups hub lists the intermediate and expert builds for each trade.
We did not test any of these products. The list is researched from manufacturer listings and owner reviews, and the choices follow the beginner rule: the least spend that does real work, with nothing that you will regret not having bought, and nothing you will not use in the first year. Prices are shown as budget bands rather than numbers: every button shows Amazon's current price, and the total is a band rounded up from catalog prices.
The layout assumption is a 12 x 22 ft one-car garage with a sedan parked or a 20 x 20 two-car garage with one car in it. In a 12 x 20 ft bay with a sedan, almost nothing on this list fits the floor while the car is in: you roll things out after the car leaves. That is not a flaw in the list, it is the shape of the garage, and the park-the-car calculator shows your own numbers.
Buy the three tools that make 90 percent of the cuts, then the dust control that keeps you breathing, then the storage that keeps the car in the garage. Clamps and a bench come before a bigger saw. Safety gear is on the list as lines, not as an afterthought, because that is where beginner budgets leak.

Upgrade in this order, because each step removes the next biggest frustration:
A garage woodshop is a negotiation between three things: the money, the floor and the car. A beginner has the least money, so the list is cheap; the garage is small, so every machine folds, stacks or rolls; and the car has to come home, so nothing is bolted to the slab. Everything on this list can be put back against a wall in a few minutes, and everything draws under about 15 A, so no machine needs a circuit of its own.
Before you buy, measure. A mid-size sedan is about 16 ft long, so a 20 ft deep bay leaves 3 ft behind the front bumper once the door gap is counted. The layout calculator packs this exact list (jobsite saw, bandsaw, drill press, bench and shelving) into your garage with and without the car. If the answer is "one machine fits," trust it: it is better to buy two tools you can use than seven you cannot unpack.
Every machine here runs on 120V. The saw and the shop vacuum are the largest loads (a 15 A saw is the biggest), so give the saw a 20 A circuit of its own if you can. Do not run the saw and the vacuum on one circuit: when they start together they trip the breaker. A receptacle tester takes a second and tells you whether an outlet is wired correctly. If your garage has one or two outlets on the same circuit as the door opener, run the saw on a short, heavy cord and plug the vacuum in elsewhere.
When you add a collector, a compressor and a heater, count the circuits first: the workshop amps calculator shows when a subpanel makes sense, and the woodshop subpanel page works the larger shop. Have a licensed electrician confirm any new circuit.
This is a start, not a ceiling. The intermediate woodshop swaps the jobsite saw for a heavier benchtop saw, adds a bandsaw, a benchtop planer and jointer and a wall-mount collector. The expert shop wires 240V for a cabinet saw and a cyclone. Both are laid out in the setups hub. Between them, the layout section shows how much of each fits your garage.

A table saw (a folding jobsite saw is enough), a miter saw, a drill press, a sander, clamps, a bench, a shop vacuum with a cyclone separator and safety gear. This page lists every line with links.
Yes in a 12 x 22 ft or larger bay, if every machine folds or rolls. In a 12 x 20 ft bay with a sedan, tools have to be rolled out when the car leaves: see the park-the-car calculator.
No. Every machine on this list runs on 120V. Plan 240V when you add a cabinet saw, a large collector or a 60 gallon compressor.
Safety gear, then the saw, then clamps and a bench. Add the drill press and router table as projects need them.
This page is researched guidance, not professional electrical, engineering or safety advice. Circuits, loads and clearances depend on your house, your service and your town: have a licensed electrician confirm any wiring, and check local code and each manufacturer's manual before you act.
