5 in swivel bench vise
Both are 5 in vises with a 360 degree swivel base. The Grizzly one is a drop-forged industrial unit; the Amazon one is a lower-priced 5 in cast-iron vise.
Complete setup · Intermediate welding and fab
An intermediate garage welding and fab setup is a YESWELDER 205A multi-process MIG welder on 110V/220V, a welding cart, a 55A plasma cutter, a 20 gallon compressor to feed it, a 5 in swivel vise, grinders, a 6-50 receptacle on a 240V circuit and the fire and fume gear: about 40 lines. The Amazon lines total under $5,000; Grizzly items are priced on grizzly.com. It wants a 20 x 20 ft or larger garage with the car parked outside while you work.
Amazon pick and Grizzly pick for the key machines, before the full list.
Both are 5 in vises with a 360 degree swivel base. The Grizzly one is a drop-forged industrial unit; the Amazon one is a lower-priced 5 in cast-iron vise.
Both are 8 in bench grinders with work lights. Neither needs more than a 120V outlet; pick on price and the wheel guards you like.
Both are oil-free, quiet-series 20-gallon compressors, so they are tolerable in an attached garage. Pick on the sale, the warranty path and the noise rating you can live with.
Prices change often and Grizzly runs sales, so the buttons show current prices.
This is the buy-once weld shop for someone who has run a small welder for a season and now builds frames, brackets, trailers and fixtures. It is the middle rung of the welding and fab ladder: the beginner build starts with a 140A machine, the expert build adds a 60 gallon 240V compressor and the circuits to match, and the setups hub lists all three.
The product choices are researched from manufacturer listings, published specifications and owner reviews, not from our own bench time. The rule for this tier is to add the two capabilities that change what you can build: a plasma cutter, which turns sheet and plate into clean parts, and the compressed air to drive it. Both pull on the electrical system, so the circuit plan matters more here than the machine list.
The layout assumption is the 20 x 20 welding and fab layout: one bay holds the weld table, the cart, the plasma cutter and the grinding station, and the other bay is the car's, with the car parked outside while you weld. Sparks, spatter and grinding dust belong nowhere near paint, fuel or a battery. A sedan is about 16 ft long and 6.2 ft wide; even in a 20 x 20 bay with the car in the far bay, keep the weld table at the far end from it and use a welding blanket.
If you have not welded a bead, start with the beginner build. If you want to cut thick plate daily or run long jobs, a hobby plasma cutter and a 20 gallon compressor will frustrate you; read the duty cycle and the cut thickness on the listings. If the panel has no room for a 50 A circuit, the 205A welder runs on 120V at reduced output. And if the garage is a tight one-car bay, this tier does not fit: use the 12 x 22 welding layout and choose the beginner list.

The weld table and cart take a bay about 8 to 10 ft along the wall, the plasma cutter and compressor sit nearby on the same wall, the bench grinder and vise on a second, and the 24 to 36 in operator zone stays clear. The car goes outside while you weld. If you park the car in the far bay while you grind, keep a welding blanket or a barrier between it and the grinder, because grinding sparks travel further than people expect. The layout calculator packs your list into your bay with and without a car. Sedan numbers: about 16 ft by 6.2 ft, parked 12 in from the door.
The compressor is the noisy item. In an attached garage, a quiet-series oil-free unit is the polite choice, and the compressor stands against a wall away from the weld table, since compressors draw air from the room and should not pull fume past the operator. For compressor sizing, see the compressor for sanding and grinding page.
Three machines draw real current. A 205A welder at 240V wants a 6-50 receptacle on a 50 A breaker in the usual setup; read the listing for the input current. The plasma cutter takes 120V or 240V, and 240V gives more cutting capacity. The 20 gallon, 2 HP compressor is a 120V machine: use a 20 A circuit of its own. Under NEC Table 430.248 a 2 HP single-phase motor draws 24 A at 115V or 12 A at 230V, so a 120V 2 HP compressor is a heavy load and should not share a circuit with the grinder.
That adds up to: one 50 A, 240V circuit for the welder (and the plasma cutter, one at a time), one 20 A for the compressor, one for the bench, one for lights. A 60 A subpanel fed with 6 AWG gives you the room. The 240V circuit calculator, the workshop amps calculator and the welding and fab subpanel page do the sum; the outlet install cost calculator estimates the electrician. Never run a welder on a dryer cord or a double-tapped breaker.
The garage is a worse place to weld than a shop because it holds a car, stored paint, cardboard and often a water heater with a pilot. Clear a 10 ft radius around the table. Keep gas cylinders upright and chained to the cart or wall. Do not weld or cut a fuel tank, a drum or any closed container. Do not weld galvanized, plated or painted steel without grinding off the coating and ventilating. After you finish, walk the shop, check behind the table and under the bench, and check again in an hour. Have an extinguisher where you can reach it without crossing the table. This page is planning information, not safety instruction: follow the welder manual, your local fire code and your insurer.
For generic references such as steel gauges and wire feed speeds see WorkshopCalc. The 240V MIG welder fit sheet shows a welder in each garage size.
The Amazon lines on this page total as a budget band rounded up from catalog prices; every button shows the current price. Grizzly items, the vise, the chest, the cabinet and the grinder, are priced on grizzly.com and change weekly.
At full output, yes: the welder runs on 110V or 220V, and 240V gives more capacity. A 6-50 receptacle on a 50 A breaker is the usual welder circuit. Read the listing and have a licensed electrician confirm it.
The plasma cutter listing gives the air pressure and flow it needs. A 20 gallon, 2 HP compressor handles short cuts; for long cuts a 60 gallon unit on 230V keeps up. The CFM calculator checks it.
Not safely close to the car. Park the car outside while you weld, clear a 10 ft radius around the table, and keep extinguishers within reach.
The welders here do both. Flux core needs no gas and tolerates a drafty garage; gas MIG is cleaner on thin steel but gas blows away in a draft. Many garage welders use both.
This page is researched guidance, not professional electrical, engineering or safety advice. Circuits, loads and clearances depend on your house, your service and your town: have a licensed electrician confirm any wiring, and check local code and each manufacturer's manual before you act.
