Top tool chest
Pick the Amazon cart if you want one rolling unit; pick the Grizzly 42 in top chest if it will sit on a bench or on the matching roller cabinet.
Complete setup · Expert auto shop
An expert garage auto shop is a 60 gallon 230V two-stage compressor with a hose reel and a 71-piece air tool kit, a Grizzly 42 in chest and roller cabinet, a hardwood workbench, floor tiles, a 240V garage heater, a dehumidifier, 6-pack lighting and a 60 A subpanel: about 40 lines. The Amazon lines total under $6,000; Grizzly items are priced on grizzly.com. It wants a 24 x 24 ft garage and a 240V circuit for the compressor.
Amazon pick and Grizzly pick for the key machines, before the full list.
Pick the Amazon cart if you want one rolling unit; pick the Grizzly 42 in top chest if it will sit on a bench or on the matching roller cabinet.
The Amazon combo is a one-box purchase; the Grizzly roller cabinet pairs with its 42 in top chest when you want to add drawers in stages.
The Amazon bench is a height-adjustable hardwood top; the Grizzly bench is a fixed heavy-duty oak top on steel legs for a bench that never moves.
Both are oil-free, quiet-series 20-gallon compressors, so they are tolerable in an attached garage. Pick on the sale, the warranty path and the noise rating you can live with.
Prices change often and Grizzly runs sales, so the buttons show current prices.
This is the garage for someone who does heavy work on a regular basis: suspension, brakes, driveline, bodywork prep and the occasional engine job, and who runs air tools for more than a few seconds at a time. It is the expert rung of the auto shop ladder, after the beginner and intermediate builds; the setups hub compares all three. The product choices are researched from manufacturer listings, published specifications and owner reviews, not from our own bench time.
The central fact of this tier is air. A 60 gallon, 230V two-stage compressor keeps an impact, a die grinder or a sander running, where a 20 gallon unit stops to refill. Compressor motors sit in NEC Table 430.248: a 5 HP single-phase motor draws 56 A at 115V or 28 A at 230V, and motor circuits are sized at 125 percent, which is 35 A and a 40 A breaker at the table's number. Wire comes from Table 310.16 at 60 C: 8 AWG copper carries 40 A, 6 AWG carries 55 A. Those are planning figures only; the compressor nameplate decides, and a licensed electrician should confirm every circuit.
The layout assumption is the 24 x 24 two-car auto layout: one bay is the car, which is the workpiece, and the other holds the storage wall, the bench and the tank. A sedan is 16 ft by 6.2 ft and parks 12 in from the door; a 21 ft crew-cab truck fits a 24 ft bay with about 3 ft to spare in the length and no more. The park-the-car calculator shows the numbers for your vehicle.
A lift, an engine hoist, an engine stand, rated jack stands, wheel chocks and a floor jack are the heavy equipment of an auto shop and none is in our catalog. Buy rated equipment from an auto parts or equipment supplier, read the vehicle manual for lift points, check the slab thickness and the ceiling height before a lift, and never rely on a jack alone. This page is planning information, not safety instruction.
If you do not run air tools for long jobs, the intermediate build does the same work for a fraction of the money and wiring. If your panel is small or full, price the subpanel and the electrician before the compressor. If you rent, do not stand a vertical tank on a slab you cannot bolt. And if you work on cars a few times a year, a shop is a lot of garage to maintain: buy the beginner tools and take the car to a shop for the heavy work.

A sedan takes a bay about 16 ft long and 6.2 ft wide with a 30 in walk-around beside it, leaving a lane of 11 ft or so in the other bay. A 21 ft crew-cab truck fits a 24 ft deep bay with its 12 in door gap and 18 in at the far end, and no room for a bench across the back; keep the bench on the side wall. The 60 gallon tank stands in a corner away from the door, because it is tall, loud and draws air from the room. The 24 x 24 auto layout draws it, and the layout calculator accepts your own vehicle and bay. A lift needs ceiling height beyond the door track, so measure it first.
The compressor is the big circuit. A 230V 60 gallon, two-stage unit is usually a 5 HP class machine: Table 430.248 lists 28 A at 230V, 35 A at 125 percent, and the next standard breaker is 40 A, though the nameplate decides. A 7-1/2 HP class machine lists 40 A and needs a 50 A circuit. The heater is a second 240V load: the 7500W unit draws about 31 A at 240V (7500 divided by 240) and needs a 40 A breaker at 125 percent. The two should not be assumed to run at the same time, but the electrician decides the load calculation.
A 60 A or 100 A subpanel fed with 6 AWG or heavier gives you room for the compressor, the heater and the 120V circuits for lights, the bench and chargers. The 240V circuit calculator, the auto shop subpanel page and the outlet install cost calculator prepare you for the electrician. If you also charge an EV in the garage, read how a charger and a shop share a panel before you add loads.
A 60 gallon compressor is loud. Put it on a rubber pad, as far from the property line and any shared wall as the garage allows, and run air tools in daytime hours. Empty the tank daily: condensation collects at the bottom and rusts the tank from the inside. Drain, and keep the dehumidifier running in humid seasons. The full auto shop compressor page sizes the compressor for the tools run together.

The Amazon lines on this page total as a budget band rounded up from catalog prices. The Grizzly items, the chests, the cabinet, the benches, the vise and the grinder, are priced on grizzly.com and change weekly. Budget the electrical work and any lift separately.
A 60 gallon, two-stage, 230V compressor runs an impact, a die grinder or a sander for real work. A 20 gallon unit stops to refill. The CFM calculator checks it against your tools.
Yes, for the 60 gallon compressor and a 240V heater. Have a licensed electrician size the circuits from the nameplates.
It depends on ceiling height, slab thickness and the lift. A lift is not in our catalog; check the lift maker's specifications and your slab, and confirm with the supplier.
In a 24 x 24 ft garage, yes: one bay holds the car and the other the cabinet, bench and tank. A 21 ft truck fits that depth, though a 20 ft bay will not hold it with the door closed.
This page is researched guidance, not professional electrical, engineering or safety advice. Circuits, loads and clearances depend on your house, your service and your town: have a licensed electrician confirm any wiring, and check local code and each manufacturer's manual before you act.
