Beginner garage auto shop setup

This is the lowest total cost to a garage where you can do your own maintenance and small repairs: oil, brakes, tires, batteries and the jobs that save a shop bill. It is different from every other trade on this site because the car is not in the way of the shop, it is the work. The shop is built around a parked car and a 30 in walk-around, not around machines. The product choices are researched from manufacturer listings, published specifications and owner reviews, not from our own bench time. The beginner rule is to buy the tools that make a job possible first, then comfort, then air. A cordless impact wrench replaces a compressor for most beginner jobs, which is why the compressor here is a small pancake unit and not a big tank.

The layout assumption is the 12 x 22 one-car auto layout. A 16 ft sedan leaves about 5 ft in front of the bumper with the door closed, and a 12 x 20 leaves 3 ft. A 12 ft wide bay leaves 5.8 ft beside a 6.2 ft sedan, and from that you subtract the 30 in walk-around, which is why tool storage is vertical and rolling. Safety that the list does not sell

Never get under a car held by a jack alone. Rated jack stands, wheel chocks and a flat floor are not on this list because our catalog does not carry them; buy stands rated above the vehicle weight from an auto parts supplier, and read the vehicle manual for the lift points. Who should not buy this tier

If you only change oil twice a year, a bay full of tools is overkill: buy a drain pan and a socket set. If you do brake and suspension work every month, step to the intermediate build with a 20 gallon compressor and an air tool kit. And if the garage floor slopes, sorting that comes first.

• A big compressor. A 60 gallon unit is for sandblasting and long air tool use, which is the expert build. A pancake unit does what a beginner needs.
• An air tool kit, unless you already own a larger compressor. The cordless impact does the same work.
• A car lift. A lift needs ceiling height, a slab spec and a lot of money. It is not a beginner purchase.
• Both options in each pair. Buy one chest, one bench, one vise and one compressor.
• Floor coatings. The tiles do the job and come out when you move.
• A parts washer. A drain pan and a brush do the same for the first year.

1. Jack stands, chocks and a floor jack. Buy rated stands first. They are the single most important safety purchase and are not in our catalog; buy them from an auto parts supplier.
2. A torque wrench and a good socket set. Tightening to spec is the difference between a repair and a failure. Torque tables are on WorkshopCalc.
3. Light. A magnetic work light for under the car.
4. The compressor. When you want air tools, step up to a 20 gallon unit: the 20 gallon compressor fit sheet shows it in each garage size.

A 12 x 22 ft garage leaves 5 ft in front of a 16 ft sedan with the door closed; a 12 x 20 leaves 3 ft; a 21 ft crew-cab truck does not fit a 20 ft deep bay with the door shut. Sedan width of about 6.2 ft leaves 5.8 ft across in a 12 ft bay, and you want a 30 in walk-around on at least one side. So the shop sits on the short wall at the front of the bay, behind or beside the car: a bench, a rolling chest and a shelf, with the compressor under the bench. The honest limit of a one-car garage is that you cannot open both doors of a car and have a tool chest in the gap. Plan the chest to roll out to the driveway on nice days.

Everything here is 120V. The pancake compressor is the largest load, and the compressor listing gives its amps. Put it on a circuit of its own if you can, keep the battery chargers and lights on the bench circuit, and test every outlet with the receptacle tester. If the garage has one outlet shared with the door opener, run the compressor on a short, heavy cord and plug the chargers in somewhere else.
