Comparison
The Grizzly G0704 (7 x 27, 1 HP, 12 A at 120V, R-8 spindle, 372 lb with stand) fits a 12 x 22 ft bay beside a parked sedan, working or stored, and not a 12 x 20 ft bay with a car. The Mechmaxx VM25LD is a 1.5 HP, 7 x 27-1/2 in benchtop mill with a brushless variable-speed motor and R8 spindle, sold without a stand per its title. You supply the bench. Weight and amps are on its listing.

This is the real difference in a garage. The G0704 is listed as a mill/drill with stand, and the 372 lb weight in our sources includes the stand. The Mechmaxx title says without stand. That does not make it the cheaper way to the same place. A mill puts side loads into the column and the table, and the support under it has to be rigid and strong. A light bench that is fine for a lathe may rock under a milling cut.
If you buy the Mechmaxx, plan the support first: a steel stand or a heavy hardwood bench, bolted down, with a shelf low down for ballast. Check the listing for the machine's weight and the footprint of its base, and compare them with the load rating of whatever you put it on. Amazon bench titles give totals, for example 3000 lb for the VEVOR 72 in, but a rating is a spread load, and a point load from a mill is another thing. We researched both from manufacturer listings, published specifications and owner reviews, and did not test either one.
Our layout engine placed the G0704 alone in each of six standard bays, then with a sedan parked and walk-around clearance, then with the clearance removed to test storage. The listing in our sources gives no footprint for the G0704, so the engine's result is its own estimate and you should read the real base size on grizzly.com.
| Bay | G0704 |
|---|---|
| 12 x 20 ft one-car | Empty bay only |
| 12 x 22 ft one-car | Fits with a car, working or stored |
| 20 x 20 ft two-car | Fits with a car |
| 22 x 22 ft two-car and larger | Fits with a car |
The floor share is 3 percent of a one-car bay and 2 percent or less of a larger one. Using a 30 in operator halo, a mill needs room on the front and sides to crank the table, and more room for long work: a 27 in table with a long part can overhang the end by a foot. Do not site the mill where the table hits the car door. The G0704 fit sheet shows every bay.
The G0704 ships at 372 lb with its stand. Our rule multiplies by 1.3 for a mobile base, which gives 484 lb. The WEN 500 lb base covers that with only 16 lb of margin. Put tooling, a vise and a rotary table on the machine and you are over it, so a mill on wheels is a job for a heavier base. The VEVOR 1500 lb base has the headroom. Check the mobile base sizing calculator with your own weights.
A mill does not want to move. Cutting forces push the machine around, and a machine on casters can walk. If the mill must roll, use a base that lowers onto feet or has locking casters, and lock it before you cut. For the Mechmaxx, take its weight from the listing, multiply by 1.3 and add your bench or stand. Both machines arrive as heavy freight, so plan the path from the truck to the bay, and have an engine hoist or a pallet jack and a helper ready.
The G0704 lists 12 A at 120V. At 125 percent that is 15 A, which a 15 A breaker meets exactly, and many electricians would run a 20 A circuit on 12 AWG copper for headroom. Our engine's NEC table calculation for a 30 ft run says 20 A on 12 AWG. The listing and the table differ, so the electrician sizes from the nameplate.
The Mechmaxx title says 1.5 HP and 110V. Our sources do not give its amps, so do not assume a 15 A circuit will do. Read the amps off the listing, take 125 percent, and ask a licensed electrician what the circuit needs. A mill should have its own circuit, not one shared with a compressor or a heater. The workshop amps calculator sums your loads, and the 240V explainer covers the case where a bigger machine pushes you to 240V.
A mill throws chips further than a lathe does, and sideways. Wear safety glasses every time, and consider a clear shield. Keep sleeves and hair clear of the spindle, and never wipe chips off the table with your hand; use a brush. Hearing protection is cheap, and the catalog has ear muffs and safety glasses. If you cut anything that makes fine dust or coolant mist, wear a respirator such as the GVS P100.
Both are R8 spindle machines, which gives you a wide choice of collets and tooling. A 7 x 27 table suits small to medium parts. Our lathe and mill roundup and the machine shop start guide cover tooling, a vise and what to buy first. Budget for tooling as well as the machine.
G0704 if you want a complete mill with stand and published travels and have a 12 x 22 ft bay or larger; Mechmaxx VM25LD if you already have a bench that can carry it and the 1.5 HP brushless motor matters. The G0704 is the one we can plan a bay around, apart from its missing footprint. The Mechmaxx puts the stand, the weight and the amps on you to read from the listing. Whichever you pick, the support under the mill and the circuit behind it matter as much as the mill. Have a licensed electrician confirm the circuit.

The listing gives 372 lb with the stand. Our mobile base rule multiplies by 1.3, which is 484 lb, so a 500 lb base leaves little margin.
In our layout engine the G0704 fits a 12 x 22 ft bay beside a parked sedan, and does not fit a 12 x 20 ft bay with a car. Our sources give no listed footprint for it, so check the listing.
The listing gives 12 A at 120V. At 125 percent that is 15 A, so many installers would run a dedicated 20 A circuit. A licensed electrician should confirm it from the nameplate.
Our sources do not give amps for it. The title says 1.5 HP and 110V. Read the listing and the nameplate before you plan a circuit.
