Fixed vs mobile workbench for a garage

Choose the VEVOR 72 in bench (hardwood top, universal wheels, 3000 lb load capacity on the listing) when the car comes back into the garage and the bench has to get out of the way. Choose the Grizzly T10157 oak workbench with steel legs when the bench is permanent, the planing, chiseling and assembly are heavy, and you want it solid and still.

Choose Fixed bench if

  • The bench is the center of the shop. Hand planes, mortising, hammering and assembly want a bench that does not shift. A fixed bench does not need locking wheels to be locked.
  • The garage is a two-car bay or larger, or the car does not live inside. In our layout engine a 6 ft bench allowance (72 x 24 in) fits a 12 x 22 ft bay with a car, and a 12 x 20 ft bay only when the car is out. In a two-car garage there is room for a permanent bench and a car.
  • You want it for decades. Oak and steel legs are the bench you hand down.
  • You have a plan for power. A fixed bench sits next to a wall outlet or a ceiling drop, and the cord never moves.

Choose Bench on wheels if

  • The car parks in the garage. A bench that rolls to the wall frees the floor for the car at night. Our engine will not place a 6 ft bench beside a sedan in a 12 x 20 ft bay at all, so there the wheels are what let you move the bench out when the car is in.
  • The bench is an assembly table. A wheeled bench carries a project from the shop side to the work area. It serves as an assembly table, an outfeed table and a base for a miter saw.
  • You want built-in power. The VEVOR title lists power outlets, which means one cord to the wall and no extension cords across the floor.
  • You are renting or you may move. A bench on wheels goes onto the truck with you.

Should a garage workbench be fixed or on wheels?

It depends on what the bench has to do and whether a car has to live next to it. A bench is two jobs: a work surface and a clamp. As a work surface, it needs to be big, flat and at the right height. As a clamp, it needs to be so heavy that a hand plane pushed across a board does not walk it across the floor. A fixed bench is a better clamp. A bench on wheels is a better layout.

The good news is that a heavy bench on locking wheels is an acceptable clamp for most garage jobs. A 3000 lb load rating, as in the VEVOR title, is a structural figure, not a statement about how still it sits under a plane, and we have no data on that. Weigh it against how you work. If you plane long boards by hand every weekend, fixed. If you build, assemble, repair and sand, wheels.

The Grizzly T10157 is a fixed bench; the listing is the place for its dimensions and weight, and our briefs name it and no more. The workbench size calculator sizes a bench to your bay, and the one-car garage workbench size page applies that to the smallest bay.

Which bench lets the car back in?

Our layout engine places a 72 x 24 in bench allowance in each bay, alone, with and without a parked sedan, and with the walk-around clearance halo removed to test whether it can be stored.

Bay6 ft bench, with a car
12 x 20 ft one-carEmpty bay only
12 x 22 ft one-carFits with a car
20 x 20 ft two-car and upFits with a car

Both benches use the same footprint in that test. The difference is what you do with the bench in the 12 x 20 ft bay, where neither fits beside a sedan: the fixed bench has to live in a corner the car never needs, and the wheeled bench can be rolled out of the door or to a wall at the other end when the car comes in. The 24 in depth is a planning allowance, and the listings give the real depths. See the 12 x 20 ft woodshop layout.

A word of caution for any bench next to a car: a car door opens about 2 ft out, and the 30 in walk-around beside the car in our rules exists for that reason. A bench in the door arc loses paint.

Outlets, cords and the circuit

The VEVOR bench lists power outlets, and so does the Grizzly line of adjustable benches (T34010 and T34011), but the T10157 title does not. A built-in strip is a convenience, not a circuit. Everything plugged into it shares one cord and one breaker. Tools that start with a surge, such as a router, a miter saw or a compressor, should not share a strip with a charger and a lamp.

Plan the circuit first. A 20 A, 120V circuit with 12 AWG copper is the usual bench circuit; a licensed electrician should confirm what your garage has. The workshop amps calculator adds up the tools you plan to run together. A heavy-gauge cord such as the 12/3 50 ft cord or a retractable reel such as the DEWENWILS 40 ft reel serves a wheeled bench better than a thin cord, since a bench that moves drags its cord with it. Voltage drop on a long cord is real; check it in the voltage drop calculator.

For a fixed bench, a ceiling reel or a wall outlet strip over the bench keeps cords off the floor. For a mobile bench, put the outlet at the place where the bench parks.

Height, wheels and the slab

The VEVOR bench is described as adjustable, so the top height can be set. Whatever bench you choose, set the height for the work, not for the furniture. Hand work is lower than machine work and assembly is lower than sanding. The workbench height page and the workbench height calculator turn your height into a number.

Wheels bring their own limits. A garage slab slopes toward the door so water runs out, and a bench on casters will drift downhill if the locks are off. Hard wheels roll well on a swept slab and badly on a cracked one. If you plan to put a router or a vise on the bench, lock the wheels and test the bench by leaning on it. A bench with a vise is a bench that wants to be heavy: a leg vise or a bench vise exerts racking force. If the bench rolls, mount the vise at the end near a leg.

Anti-fatigue mats such as the Vergo 15/16 in mat or the FEATOL 0.9 in mat interact with wheels: a mat is a trip edge and a rolling bench rides up on it. Place the mat where the bench stops, not where it travels.

Vises, clamps and the tool wall

A fixed oak bench is the natural home for a woodworking vise. The Grizzly cabinetmaker's H7788 and the IRWIN 6-1/2 in woodworker's vise both mount to a bench edge. A metal vise such as the Nakkaa 5 in or the Grizzly T33818 belongs on a steel-leg bench. The bench top has to be thick enough to take the bolts and rigid enough not to flex; the listing for each bench says what it is, and a bench that is rated for 3000 lb of load is not necessarily rated for a vise's racking force, so read the manual or call the seller.

Clamps live on the bench too. The JORGENSEN 36 in parallel bar clamps and the BESSEY K Body REVO kit are the standard bench clamps. Storage over the bench, a pegboard and a shelf, uses wall space; the bench that rolls away leaves the pegboard behind, so decide what lives on the wall and what lives on the bench.

Verdict

Wheels if a car lives in the garage; fixed if the bench is the heart of a shop that has its own bay. In a 12 x 20 ft garage, buy the bench that rolls. In a two-car garage with an unclaimed corner, buy the bench that stays. If you cannot decide, a fixed bench on a wall with a wheeled assembly table beside it is the arrangement many shops end up with. The full range is in the garage workbench roundup.

Frequently asked questions

Is a workbench on wheels stable enough for woodworking?

With locking wheels on a flat slab, a heavy bench is fine for assembly, sanding and light planing. For heavy hand-plane work and chiseling, a bench that does not move is steadier. The VEVOR title gives a 3000 lb load capacity, which is not a measure of how still it sits.

Can I fit a 6 ft bench in a one-car garage with a car?

In our layout engine, a 72 x 24 in bench allowance fits a 12 x 22 ft bay with a sedan and fits a 12 x 20 ft bay only when the car is out. A bench on wheels that rolls against a wall is the practical answer in the smaller bay.

Do I need power outlets on the bench?

It saves cords across the floor, which matters when a car drives in. The built-in strip is still a single cord on a single breaker, so plan the circuit with the workshop amps calculator and have a licensed electrician confirm it.

How tall should the bench be?

Set the height for the work: lower for planing and hand work, higher for sanding and electronics. The workbench height calculator turns your height and task into a number, and an adjustable bench lets you change it.

Is the Grizzly T10157 bench adjustable?

It is described as a heavy-duty oak workbench with steel legs, a fixed bench. For an adjustable Grizzly bench with outlets, see the T34010 and T34011 benches in the best-workbench roundup, or check each listing.
