Dust collector size for a 12x22 one-car garage shop
The woodshop that fits a 12 x 22 ft garage has 6 machines with dust ports, the hungriest asking 400 CFM, so shop for a collector rated 500 CFM or more with 5 in branch duct (940 CFM if you run two gates at once). Of the Grizzly collectors in our data, G0860, G1028Z2, G0441 clear that bar.
The machines that fit this garage
| Machine | CFM at the hood | Branch duct |
|---|---|---|
| Planer (on the tool bench) | 400 | 5 in |
| Hybrid saw | 350 | 4 in |
| Bandsaw | 350 | 4 in |
| Miter station | 350 | 4 in |
| Jointer (on the tool bench) | 350 | 4 in |
| Drill press (on the tool bench) | 200 | 3 in |
This list comes from the 12x22 one-car woodshop layout, which packs machines into the floor with operator room. Left out for lack of floor: Shelving, so their ports are not counted.
Collector rating and duct diameter
One open gate needs 400 CFM; with a 25 percent allowance for leakage and a loading filter that is 500 CFM. Duct diameter follows from the airflow at 4000 feet per minute: 400 CFM calls for a 4.3 in duct, rounded up to 5 in. A main line carrying two open gates (750 CFM) wants 6 in. Your longest straight run is roughly 34 ft along two walls, and every elbow and foot of flex hose cuts the airflow, so a collector's free-air rating is a ceiling, not a promise.
| Collector | Rated CFM | Clears one gate |
|---|---|---|
| Grizzly G0860, 1-1/2 HP, 868 CFM at 1.8 in SP | 868 | yes |
| Grizzly G1028Z2, 1-1/2 HP bag type, 1300 CFM bag rating | 1300 | yes |
| Grizzly G0441, 3 HP 240V, 1654 CFM at 2.0 in SP | 1654 | yes |
Small-bay options
If the collector itself will not fit, the usual fallback is a shop vacuum with a cyclone separator on one machine at a time: it is the realistic answer in a one-car bay with a car in it. The dust collector calculator lets you tick your own machines.

Cyclone dust collector for a one-man shop
The Grizzly G0860 is a two-stage cyclone on 120V with a 1 micron canister; the Amazon pick is a bag-style 1 HP machine. The cyclone costs more and keeps the filter clean far longer.
3 HP cyclone collector (240V)
Nothing on Amazon in our catalog matches a 3 HP, 1654 CFM cyclone, so this one is Grizzly-direct only. It needs a 240V circuit and about 400 lb of freight.
Prices change often and Grizzly runs sales, so the buttons show current prices.

Frequently asked questions
Will a 1 HP dust collector work in a 12x22 one-car garage?
A 1 HP collector is rated around 560 CFM on the listings we carry, which clears one open gate here (500 CFM needed) only if the duct run is short. For 6 ported machines on 34 ft of duct, a collector in the 800 CFM class leaves margin.
Can I run the dust collector on 120V?
The Grizzly G0860 is a 1-1/2 HP, 120V collector at 15 A on the listing, so it needs its own 20 A circuit. The G0441 is a 3 HP, 240V machine at 22 A and needs a 240V circuit.
